While many members were celebrating the wide variety of State-Funded & Voluntary ‘blue light’ services at FESSEF 2016 yesterday, the newest vehicle in the St John Ambulance Ireland fleet – SJ63 – was covering her first duty in Cork.

Today saw D/O Michael O’Reilly from Cork received by Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr. Chris O’Leary in recognition of the work done by Michael as Medical Co-ordinator for public events in the Cork area. Michael who has worked with SJAI for 40 years works alongside the local authority, Gardai, our sister organisations and event organisers to ensure the best level of medical cover for all public events in the Cork City Council area. The St John Ambulance Association had been teaching first aid to lay-people in Ireland since 1881. In 1903, eminent physician Dr John Lumsden – the Chief medical officer at the Guinness Brewery – set up the first division of the St John Ambulance Brigade in Ireland. The purpose of the Brigade was to provide trained, uniformed personnel to assist at accidents and medical emergencies. At the time, membership was restricted to Guinness employees. However, the organisation grew quickly and the first Division open to public membership – City of Dublin – formed in 1905.

These are Darragh Lawlor’s words; the Pavilions Shopping Centre employee who recently saved his uncle’s life. Darragh, 24, volunteers with St John Ambulance Swords as well as working in the shopping centre as a security guard and first aider.
Two weeks ago, Darragh was called to assist a man in a shop on the main street in Swords. Darragh’s colleague witnessed a customer collapse and go into cardiac arrest. CPR was started immediately.
