Happy International Volunteer Day 2017

International Volunteer Day is celebrated worldwide every year on December 5th and is endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly. International Volunteer Day provides an opportunity for volunteers and organisations to celebrate their efforts, share their values, and to promote their work.

The theme of International Volunteer Day (IVD) 2017, “Volunteers Act First. Here. Everywhere.” is a recognition of the positive solidarity of volunteers around the world who answer calls in times of crisis, helping save lives today and supporting those who want to continue living their lives with dignity tomorrow.

Every year in Ireland St. John Ambulance Volunteers provide a vital service to their local communities in many ways by providing medical cover at local and national events with varied skill levels among our volunteers from First Aiders, Emergency Medical Technicians to nurses and doctors, who all freely give of their time to help others.

Every year our volunteers teach hundreds of people first aid in schools and work places across the county. Our volunteers have been proudly providing this service in Ireland since 1903 and continue to make a difference by saving countless lives over the years.

The work of St. John Ambulance Volunteers is not unique in Ireland as our fellow St. John volunteers provide this vital service internationally in over 40 countries across the world.

On Saturday 2/12/17 St John Ambulance Ireland and the Order of St John acknowledged the service of our volunteers with the presentation of service awards from three years up to an amazing sixty years and Membership of the Order of St John.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our Volunteers for their time and efforts, truly living up to our motto ‘In the service of humanity’.
