Learn How to Save a Life in Summer 2011
Written by Patrick Rushe
We are delighted to announce our upcoming 3 Day Occupational First Aid Courses on the 28th to 30th of June, the 5th of 7th of July, and the 26th to 28th of July. There is never a bad time to learn how to save a life, and these course will give you the skills you need.
All of our instructors are experienced first aiders and hold external accreditation. On successful completion of the course, you will receive your FETAC Level 5 Occupational First Aid certificate. This empowers you to act as an appointed first aider in the workplace and so is highly sought after by potential employers.
During the course, you'll learn the importance of first aid, and how even simple techniques can not only save lives, but also dramatically limit the risk to the casualty of long term disability or suffering.
You will get to work with the latest in equipment and you will be fully trained on how to deploy a Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). This life saving piece of equipment can help restart the heart after a cardiac arrest. It can literally make the difference between life and death; rapid deployment of an AED has been proven to greatly improve a casualties chances of survival.
Teaching you first aid is all part of our vision here at St. John Ambulance; that everyone should have immediate access to first aid no matter where they are or what they are doing at the onset of illness or injury. To this end, we've a great course prepared for you that will not only be informative but also great fun.

The cost of this course is €300. The cost reflects a high trainer to trainee ratio, an emphasis on small-group learning, and the fact that successful completion leads to FETAC Level 5 and OFA certification, which covers business needs under Health and Safety regulations.
The three courses listed here will take place in our National Headquarters on Leeson Street in Dublin City Centre which is very easy to get to using public transport.
The courses all take place over ;three days. They start at 9am and end at 5pm each day.
The course is tested with an examination and practical assessment. Your certificate will be valid for two years, with an option to extend during the life of certification by attending a 1 day Refresher Course which, not alone allows you to practice your skills again, but also brings you up to date with the latest best practice in first aid.
What is the syllabus?
Why bother?
Every year there are over 13,000 deaths in Ireland due to circulatory problems most of which are from coronary heart disease. Approximately 50% progress to cardiac arrest within 2 hours. For many victims it is what happens in the first few minutes following a heart attack that will decide their fate. Every two minutes someone, somewhere, has a heart attack.
