Caribbean co-operation

stjohn_dominica

As part of our commitment to the international Order of St John, The St John Ambulance Brigade of Ireland have developed a STAPLE relationship with St John Dominica.

The term STAPLE stands for Short Term Assistance Plus Local Effort.

Our first effort in Short Term Assistance was to ship a set of training mannequins to help develop the skills of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation for St John volunteers on this very poor, but beautiful, Caribbean island, which covers only about 1% of the surface area of Ireland, although with a greater population density.

Dominica is only 50Km long and 25Km wide (smaller than Co Kildare!) and suffers from storms that wash away the roads, isolating communities and forcing them to rely on their own resources.

St John Dominica volunteers act as extenders of the healthcare system in such circumstances.

We hope our efforts will make a positive difference to the people of Dominica.
